ประวัติความเป็นมา
ประเพณีวันลอยกระทงของไทยและเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ เป็นวันสำคัญวันหนึ่งของศาสนาฮินดู ตรงกับวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 12 ตามปฏิทินจันทรคติไทย ตามปฏิทินจันทรคติล้านนา มักจะตกอยู่ในราวเดือนพฤศจิกายน ตามปฏิทินสุริยคติ บางปีเทศกาลลอยกระทงก็จะมาตรงกับเดือนตุลาคมด้วยเช่นปี พ.ศ. 2544 วันลอยกระทงปีนั้น ตรงกับวันที่ 31 ตุลาคม และจะมาตรงกันอีกครั้งในปี พ.ศ. 2563

ประเพณีนี้กำหนดขึ้นเพื่อเป็นการสะเดาะเคราะห์และขอขมาต่อพระแม่คงคา บางหลักฐานเชื่อว่าเป็นการบูชารอยพระพุทธบาทที่ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำนัมทามหานที และบางหลักฐานก็ว่าเป็นการบูชาพระอุปคุตอรหันต์หรือพระมหาสาวก สำหรับประเทศไทยประเพณีลอยกระทงได้กำหนดจัดในทุกพื้นที่ทั่วประเทศ โดยเฉพาะบริเวณที่ติดกับแม่น้ำ ลำคลอง หรือ แหล่งน้ำต่างๆ ซึ่งแต่ละพื้นที่ก็จะมีเอกลักษณ์ที่น่าสนใจแตกต่างกันไป

นอกจากนี้บางประเทศก็มีเทศกาลลอยกระทงด้วย เช่น ประเทศลาว มักจะลอยกระทงในวันออกพรรษา (ขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 11) ในงานไหลเฮือไฟของลาว ประเทศกัมพูชา มีการลอยกระทง 2 ครั้ง คือลอยกระทงหลวงกลางเดือน 11 ราษฎรจะทำกระทงเล็กและบรรจุอาหารลงไปด้วยส่วนกลางเดือน 12 จะมีกระทงหลวงเป็นกระทงใหญ่ ราษฎรจะไม่ได้ทำและกระทงนี้จะมีอาหารบรรจุลงไปด้วยเช่นกัน โดยมีคติว่าเพื่อส่งส่วนบุญไปให้เปรตเทศกาลน้ำจะมีการเฉลิมฉลองด้วยการแข่งเรือยาวการแสดงพุลดอกไม้ไฟ จัดขึ้นทุกปีตั้งแต่วันขึ้น 14 ค่ำ 15 ค่ำ จนถึงแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือนพฤศจิกายน ประเทศพม่า ในวันลอยกระทง ผู้คนจะพากันทำกระทงตกแต่งเป็นรูปคล้ายดอกบัวบาน ปักธูปเทียน และนิยมตัดเล็บ เส้นผม หรือใส่เหรียญกษาปณ์ลงไปในกระทง แล้วนำไปลอยในแหล่งน้ำ ส่วนในพื้นที่ติดทะเลก็นิยมลอยกระทงริมฝั่งทะเล เชื่อว่าเป็นการลอยเคราะห์ไป นอกจากนี้ยังเชื่อว่าการลอยกระทงเป็นการบูชาและขอขมาพระแม่คงคาอีกด้วย
